When Brittany Bunker found out her father was ill and likely wouldn’t make it another day or two, she was frantic to get home to see him before he passed away. She immediately talked to her supervisor in the military and was granted leave to get to his bedside. Getting all the way home wasn’t going to be that easy.

Brittany knew it would take four flights to get her all the way home, but she was determined to make it. When her first flight left the airport late, it started a chain of events that put her at risk for not making it home before her father passed away.

She left on Monday, April 2, and after her first flight leaving late, Brittany missed her next flight. Fortunately, a stewardess helped her get on the last flight going out that night and she was able to board her second flight.

On her third flight, a gentleman came up to Brittany and showed him pictures of his Malinois. Brittany had Shiva, her service dog, with her and the man said he had served in the National Guard and grew up in an area close to where Brittany had grown up. Before the flight landed and Brittany could leave on her final flight home, she received devastating news.

Her final flight home had been cancelled and she had no idea how she was going to get the rest of the way home. If she waited for the next flight, her father might not be alive when she arrived, but her family was five hours away.

Brittany began making phone calls and just as her family had made plans to come and get her and drive her back home, the gentlemen she had talked to earlier approached her. He wasn’t willing to let Brittany miss getting home to her father in time and had stepped in to help her.

The man had arranged for a professional driver to take Brittany the five hours from Chicago’s airport to her home. Brittany was at first apprehensive, but the man showed the stewardess his receipts for the driver and the special precautions he’d taken to be sure Brittany arrived home safely to her father.

The kind gentleman told her the only thing he wanted was for her to let him know that she had made it home safely; and she did. She arrived home about 3 a.m. on April 4. The driver told Brittany the gentleman had paid almost $900 for her trip home. She was shocked and thankful.

Brittany made it home in time to see her father who died two days after her arrival. She took to social media to thank the gentleman for his help and was overwhelmed with the responses she and he both received. So many, in fact, that Brittany had to remove his name and ask people not to send anymore thanks. The overwhelming response had crashed the server at his work with all of the emails he had received.

She says his kindness was something that she will never forget. He was trying to be a good patriot and she hopes that one day she can do for someone else what he was able to do for her.
