Ginny was always elevating her husband, but she also knew how to bring him back to earth. Ginny once requested that Newhart remove the recyclables. That day, Newhart was feeling particularly smug about himself, so he pushed her.

When Ginny politely requested that her husband remove the recyclables, he inquired as to whether she believed Angelina Jolie had requested Brad Pitt to do so. Ginny quickly joked that she wouldn’t ask Newhart to do it if he were Brad Pitt.

Over the course of their many years together, the couple gave birth to four children: Robert William Newhart, Jennifer Newhart, Courtney Newhart, and Timothy Newhart. Their daughter’s nickname honors Buddy Hackett, who arranged Newhart and Ginny’s first date.

Newhart, who is now 93 and recently widowed, gave an interview in 2019 right after he turned 90, during which he discussed what it was like to be 90 and how it felt to have been married for such a long time.

When asked how he felt about turning 90, Newhart responded that he was happy to have had the opportunities he had, including the first comedy record to reach number one, two self-titled TV shows, and the people he met.

But Newhart never imagined he would live to be 90. He said he felt like he inherited his parents’ longevity genes because his mother died in her early 90s and his father died in his late 80s.

The actor has recently lost dear friends and talked about what that was like for him to live through, but he is also grateful that he has been able to live this long and make friends along the way.

According to Newhart, losing friends like Don Rickles, Mike Conners, and Tim Conway helped him put everything into perspective. He started making time for his family and seeing his close friends more frequently as a priority.

Even though his children and grandchildren adore him, not all of them have dabbled in comedy. However, his grandson, who is now 15 years old, tried standup when he was only twelve.

The young man responded that some jokes worked and others didn’t, but he persisted when Newhart asked if he had enjoyed his set. Then Newhart boosted his confidence by saying:

Newhart now spends a lot of time with his family and frequently talks about his wife on social media. He mentioned the anniversary of their first date and posted pictures of himself and Ginny over the years in January of this year.

He described how Hackett had arranged for them to go on a blind date before disclosing that their wedding was scheduled for January 12, 1963. He claimed that by sharing their favorite pictures, they wished to commemorate the day. What a lovely couple!
