I saw the young woman across the street as I was finishing up my morning coffee at a local cafe. She was obviously cold and unhappy and appeared to be panhandling change from people as they passed by. She was huddled in the doorway of an unopened store and cradling what seemed to be a very tiny baby.
When I left the cafe, I had intended to go give her a few dollars to get a bite to eat, but when I approached her, she was in tears. She tried to put on her best game face and asked me for some change. Instead of giving her the money I’d planned, I asked her if I could take her to a nearby grocery store to get her and her baby a few things.
Although hesitant, she agreed and we headed to the store. I picked up a can of formula for her baby that appeared to be only two or three months old. We got diapers, wipes, and a few other items for the baby and mother. Then I asked her if I could buy her a meal at the cafe I’d just left.

We went and sat down at the cafe where she snarfed down a burger and fries followed by pie and ice cream. I don’t think she’d had a decent meal in days. We talked a lot an eventually I asked her if she’d like me to take her home. She looked up at me with a blank stare.
She admitted that she wanted to go home, but when she’d found out a year ago that she was pregnant, her parents got mad at her and she ran away. She had stolen $5,000 from her dad and she was sure they wouldn’t want her to come home.
I persisted and asked her if she’d like to just call and talk to them. She didn’t. Finally, I offered to call them for her and she actually agreed. Awkwardly I introduced myself when her mother answered the phone. I explained to her the situation and she asked to speak to her daughter.

The girl sitting with me was just a teenager herself and when she began talking to her mother, they both cried. After they were finished, I talked to the mother again. When I got off the phone I took the girl to the bus station and bought her a ticket home.
I packed her a bag with snacks and essentials for the baby for the ride home and gave her $100 for incidentals along her journey home. To this day, I haven’t told anyone about helping her, but I’m glad she finally got to go home and reunite with her parents.
