Earlier this week, Prince Harry announced that he was writing a tell-all memoir about his life that will be released sometime next year. Unfortunately for him, however, this is now backfiring on him in the United States, as Americans are reportedly not happy about him using his royal titles to release his memoirs.
In his announcement of the memoir, Harry said that he had written it “not as the prince I was born but as the man I have become.” He then signed off the announcement with the signature in the style of Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex
This did not sit well with quite a few Americans, according to royal commentator Molly Mulshine.
“He said that he is not writing this as a prince he is writing it as the man he had become,” Mulshine said, according to The Express. “But he signed it Prince Harry Duchess of Sussex. It is like you are in America now! We don’t use the titles.”
“People are having issues with that I think,” royal expert Joe Drake added in agreement. “There is a lot of this, not the prince I am but the man I am but then it is all over…the signature is Prince Harry.”
Mulshine then doubled down by saying that Harry’s announcement amounted to “word salad,” with her condemning his skills as a writer as she took apart his statement.
“My first impression is the writer in me and the former editor in me I just hope his ghostwriter is going to talk to him about the use of cliches,” she said. “‘I have worn many hats literally and figuratively’ What! He’s going to have a whole chapter on literal hats he has worn? It is a lot of cliches, it is a lot of world salad.”
“And you like you said saying it is going to be ‘accurate and wholly truthful’…well I hope so! It’s a memoir!” Mulshine continued.
“I interpreted that as don’t worry I am not going to skew the truth,” Drake said in response. “Like I’m going to tell you what really went down. But you are right you shouldn’t need to say that it is going to be truthful. A memoir innately should be truthful.”
Harry left the world stunned when he announced the memoir on Monday.
“I’m writing this not as the prince I was born but as the man I have become,” he said in the announcement. “I’ve worn many hats over the years, both literally and figuratively, and my hope is that in telling my story — the highs and lows, the mistakes, the lessons learnt — I can help show that no matter where we come from, we have more in common than we think.”
“I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to share what I’ve learnt over the course of my life so far and excited for people to read a firsthand account of my life that’s accurate and wholly truthful,” Harry added.
