Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been keeping their christening plans for their daughter Lilibet “Lili” Diana under wraps, but a royal expert is speaking out this week to say that depending on what they decide to do, they may prevent 95 year-old Queen Elizabeth from attending the ceremony.
Royal expert Daniela Elser said that if Meghan and Harry decide to have the christening in the United States, where they now reside, they may inadvertently prevent the Queen from attending.
“If the Sussexes were to decide they wanted the christening to happen back in the UK, perhaps even in September when it has been rumored that both Harry and Meghan will return to London, then it would be construed as an olive branch after years of intra-family squabbling and rancor,” Elser said, according to The Express.
“However, if the Sussexes’ decided to hold the ceremony in California, thus precluding the Queen who no longer travels internationally from attending, it would be seen as nothing less than a clear rejection of the Royal Family,” she continued.
Elser went on to say that Meghan and Harry do have a third option when it comes to Lili’s christening.
“There is also a third option here: They decide to skip a baptism entirely,” she said. “But again, this too would be read as deeply disrespectful to Her Majesty given she is, after all, the head of the Church of England.”
Though Meghan and Harry have trashed the royal family many times over the past few months, they have tried to remain loyal to the Queen herself. In her explosive tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey back in March, Meghan stressed that the Queen has always been “wonderful” to her, adding that she called the monarch back in February after her late husband Prince Philip was admitted to the hospital.
The Queen did not attend the christening of Lili’s older brother Archie back in 2019, but this was not a snub. Instead, she missed the christening due to a scheduling conflict, which is the same reason she missed Prince Louis’ christening the year before.
Though the Queen has visited over 100 foreign countries, she gave up traveling abroad back in 2015 at the age of 89, passing these duties along to her children and grandchildren.
