Last week, we reported that the three children of Bill and Melinda Gates might “only” get $10 million each in their respective inheritance amidst their parents’ divorce. Now, however, experts are saying that Melinda may be angling to get her kids more money after she made a surprising move in this divorce.
Divorce experts told Page Six that they’ve noticed a clue in Melinda’s divorce filing that indicates she could be launching a fight to score her kids more money. This clue lays in her taking the highly unusual step of naming top trust and estate lawyers as her representatives in her divorce filing, along with the customary matrimonial legal eagles.
The renowned divorce attorneys Harriet Newman Cohen and Martha Cohen Stine explained that Melinda has “well-known trust and estate lawyers involved in the case,” and that it’s “most unusual for trust and estate lawyers’ names to be listed on a divorce filing.”
They added that this move suggests that Melinda has plans for her children’s financial futures that differ from Bill’s.
Bill, who is a billionaire, has long said that his children will be receiving a “minuscule” portion of his wealth after his death.
“I definitely think leaving kids massive amounts of money is not a favor to them,” he said a few years ago. “Some people disagree with this but Melinda and I feel good about it.”
“Bill Gates proudly announced to the world he was leaving $10 million to each of his three children, and that the rest of the billions will be left to charity … now that Melinda has control — maybe she wanted to leave more to her children than $10 million each. Maybe she didn’t agree,” Newman Cohen said, adding that the fraction of funds to be left to the kids is “tantamount to disinheriting the children.”
“We see divorces for the reason that the mother wants to protect the children,” she continued. “She may be like every other woman … protecting her children.”
Newman Cohen and Cohen Stine went on to say that Melinda’s divorce and potentially trying to score more money for her kids follows a trajectory of female empowerment that the philanthropist has been expressing as of late.
“Melinda’s decision to leave her husband — she’s the petitioner — doesn’t seem like a coincidence [given] that her youngest child turned 18,” they said.
The world was shocked earlier this month when Bill and Melinda announced that they were divorcing after 27 years.
“After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage,” Bill and Melinda said. “Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives.”
“We continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue our work together at the foundation, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives,” they added. “We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life.”
