Meghan Markle and Prince Harry just got some bad news when it was reported that their approval ratings have plummeted once again in the wake of the funeral of Prince Philip earlier this month.
The couple’s popularity had already greatly declined in the wake of their explosive tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey last month. Now, a new YouGov survey has found that Harry’s popularity fell an additional three points after his 99 year-old grandfather’s funeral on April 17.
Meanwhile, Meghan has seen her own popularity fall five points in six weeks. She did not travel back to the United Kingdom for Philip’s funeral, as she said that doctors had advised her not to travel due to the fact that she is about six months pregnant with her and Harry’s second child, a baby girl due early this summer.
In contrast, Prince Charles and Prince Edward have seen their popularity spike over the past six weeks. Charles went up seven points to 58 percent favorably, while Edward rose from 41 percent last month to 54 percent last week.
Queen Elizabeth has also seen a boost, with her popularity going from 80 percent to 85 percent after the death of her husband of 73 years, making her the most popular royal by far.
Prince William and Kate Middleton are very popular as well, with about three quarters of responders to the survey viewing them favorably.
While Meghan and Harry are seemingly not popular, the least popular royal is still Prince Andrew, who is viewed negatively by 79 percent of responders.
This comes after Oprah admitted that she was “surprised” by how far Meghan went with her claims of racism against the British royal family in her March interview.
“I had no idea that it would have the reverberating impact that it has had and continues to have,” Oprah said while appearing on Nancy O’Dell’s new TalkShopLive streaming show. “Our shared intention was the truth. They wanted to be able to tell their story and tell it in such a way that allowed them to be as truthful as possible.”
Oprah added that she was “surprised” when Meghan, who is biracial, claimed that royals had raised concerns over the darkness of baby Archie’s skin.
“What? You’re going there? You’re going all the way there,” Oprah recalled. “The reason why it was such a powerful interview … was when you have somebody else who is willing to be as open, as vulnerable, as truthful as they were.”
