The British comedian Paul O’Grady is speaking out this week to claim that he warned Meghan Markle against using “too many Americanisms” when speaking to Queen Elizabeth before the American married Prince Harry.
O’Grady told the U.K. Mirror that he has been friends with the royal family for years, and that the Queen was “easy to get on with” and “likes a good laugh.” Before Meghan married Harry in 2018, O’Grady said he gave her some tips to not “rile” the Queen. He said he told Meghan to “be totally honest with her” as she is a “straight-talking” person, some advice that seems ironic after the former actress’s tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey last month.
O’Grady explained to Meghan that it would “cause a divide” if she used too many “non-UK words,” and that she should “try to avoid too many Americanisms.”
“Always remember to say ‘lavatory,’ not ‘bathroom,’ otherwise you will really rile her!” O’Grady said.
During the shocking interview with Oprah, Meghan claimed that she was hit with racism from within the royal family, claiming that an unnamed senior royal questioned how dark her then-unborn son Archie’s skin would be. Harry refused to name this family member, only saying that it was neither Queen Elizabeth nor Prince Philip. Meghan also claimed that she felt so isolated as a royal that she considered committing suicide at one point during her pregnancy.
The royal family responded two days later in a brief statement released by Buckingham Palace.
“The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan,” the royal family said in a statement obtained by Fox News. “The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately. Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.”
Meghan will not be attending the funeral of Prince Philip tomorrow, as she has allegedly been advised by doctors that traveling is too dangerous for her right now, given the fact that she is currently about six months pregnant with her and Harry’s second child, a baby girl who is due early this summer.
