A California family is in mourning this week after a couple who were parents to five young children were killed when a giant redwood tree fell on their car during a birthday road trip.

A GoFundMe page that was set up by loved ones states that Jessica Woodruff, 45, and Jake Woodruff, 36, were killed last week when the tree fell on their car as they drove along Route-199 during a road trip for Jessica’s birthday. They leave behind five young children: Megan, Evan, Casey, Allie, and Chelsea.

“There is no getting around the devastation and trauma the loss of Jessica and Jake has brought, and as we can all imagine, there is a long road ahead, especially for the children who have been left behind,” the page added.

The California Highway Patrol confirmed that the incident happened at 11:49am as Jake was driving the couple’s 2016 Honda Accord. The tree fell right on top of the car and crushed the passenger compartment, killing both Jake and Jessica.

“The two adult children are from Jessica’s prior marriage and they have immediately stepped up to take on raising their younger siblings that share Jake and Jessica as parents,” Emma Miravalle Hood told Wild Rivers Outpost. “This family and these parents were such a humble, fun loving pair that knew they were soulmates at the moment they met.”

The GoFundMe page has already raised $175,000, but Hood said she is hoping that it will “surpass any goal set knowing that living and raising children is not cheap.”

“We are brokenhearted and are trying to do as much as we can to ensure the children have, at the very least, no financial hardships as they learn to grieve their parents in addition to navigating childhood and parenthood,” Hood said.

The GoFundMe page was updated yesterday to thank everyone for their donations.

“When they say, ‘it takes a village,’ that is an understatement, and the amount you all have done for these children and their future already, is absolutely humbling,” the page stated. “There is no getting around the devastation and trauma the loss of Jessica and Jake has brought, and as we can all imagine, there is a long road ahead, especially for the children who have been left behind. Knowing that this family, and these children have been shown so much support the past few days is beyond incredible.”
