Hollywood is in mourning today after the death of the Oscar-nominated actor George Segal, who died on Tuesday at the age of 87.
Segal’s death was confirmed by his wife Sonia Segal, who told Entertainment Tonight, “The family is devastated to announce that this morning George Segal passed away due to complications from bypass surgery.”
Abe Hoch, Segal’s longtime manager and friend, also expressed his sadness over the star’s death.
“I am saddened by the fact that my close friend and client of many years has passed away,” he said. “I will miss his warmth, humor, camaraderie and friendship. He was a wonderful human.”
Segal rose to fame in the 1960s with his work in movies like Ship of Fools, King Rat and Lost Command, but it was in 1966 when he truly became a star after appearing in the classic movie Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, which earned him an Oscar nomination.
Segal became a leading man in film from there for the rest of the 1960s and 1970s before he transitioned to television in the 1980s. Today, fans would know him as the affable grandfather Albert on “The Goldbergs,” a role he’d been playing since 2013. He was still playing the role in the current eighth season, and his last episode is scheduled to air on April 7.
“For eight years, George Segal made us laugh as Pops on The Goldbergs, but his legacy in the entertainment world spans decades,” ABC Entertainment said in a statement. “His talent has left an indelible mark and we’re grateful for the laughter and joy he has given us all. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his wife, Sonia, and his family during this difficult time.”
Adam F. Goldberg, the creator of “The Goldbergs,” which is loosely based on his childhood, took to Twitter to pay tribute to the man who played his character’s grandfather.
“Today we lost a legend. It was a true honor being a small part of George Segal’s amazing legacy,” Goldberg wrote alongside photos of Segal appearing on the show. “By pure fate, I ended up casting the perfect person to play Pops. Just like my grandfather, George was a kid at heart with a magical spark. I think these memories say it all…”
