It’s been one year since the NBA legend Kobe Bryant was killed in a helicopter crash with his 13 year-old daughter Gianna and seven others.
On Monday, his widow Vanessa Bryant got some good news from a federal judge, who ruled that she can obtain the names of four Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies who her lawyers claimed in a lawsuit shared “unauthorized” graphic photos of the crash site.
Entertainment Tonight reported that U.S. District Judge John F. Walter shot down the effort of L.A. County lawyers to keep the names of the four deputies sealed after they unsuccessfully tried to argue that releasing the deputies’ names could make them the target of hackers.
Judge Walter’s ruling means that Vanessa’s lawyers can add the deputies’ names to an amended complaint in the suit against the county and the sheriff’s department. They will also be adding details from the internal affairs investigation into their conduct.
“Indeed where the case involves allegations of police misconduct, the public has a vested interest in assessing the truthfulness of the allegations of official misconduct, and whether agencies that are responsible for investigating and adjudicating complaints of misconduct have acted properly and wisely,” the judge wrote in the ruling, according to Fox News.
“Although the Court recognizes that this case has been the subject of public scrutiny and media attention and that the Deputy Defendants are legitimately concerned that they will encounter vitriol and social media attacks, such concerns, by themselves, are not sufficient to outweigh the public’s strong interest in access,” the judge added.
With her lawsuit, Vanessa is seeking damages for negligence, invasion of privacy and emotional distress after she claims deputies and firefighters whipped out their cellphones and took photos of the remains of the nine people who were killed before sharing them.
Just before the one year anniversary of the crash, Vanessa opened up about how difficult this has been for her, while also saying she needs to stay strong for her 17-year-old daughter Natalia, 4-year-old Bianka and 1-year-old Capri.
“Let me be real – Grief is a messed up cluster of emotions,” she admitted on her Instagram Story. “One day you’re in the moment laughing and the next day you don’t feel like being alive. I want to say this for people struggling with grief and heartbreaking loss. Find your reason to live. I know it’s hard.”
“I look at my daughters and I try to push through that feeling for them,” Vanessa added. “Death is guaranteed but living the rest of the day isn’t. Find your reason.”
