In October of last year, a 26 year-old wild horse named Goliath saw his life get turned upside down one day when government helicopters suddenly descended on his herd.

Goliath ran right for the helicopters doing everything he could to protect his friends and family, but despite his efforts, Bureau of Land Management officials were able to corral the horses into a pen and begin separating them.

It’s common for government officials to round up wild horses in the western United States in order to give cattle ranchers more space for their herds to graze. The horses are typically auctioned off and sent to live in sanctuaries, and oftentimes, families are separated in the process.

Goliath ended up being separated from Red Lady, the love of his life. He was sent to a holding facility in Utah while she was sent to a Colorado farm.

Though Red Lady’s owner tried to tame her, she refused to cooperate, as her only focus was getting back to Goliath. It only took her owner a few weeks to realize that Red Lady was pregnant and desperate to get back to the father of her child.

Thankfully, Red Lady’s owner realized that she could not keep her, as the horse needed to get back with her mate!

The owner of Red Lady figured out that Skydog Sanctuary in Oregon was trying to purchase Goliath. This 9,000 acre sanctuary would give the wild horses lots of space to roam free! The owner then got in touch with Skydog owner Chris Staples and let him know that she wanted to send Red Lady to the sanctuary.

“She wanted her to be reunited with Goliath so they could have their foal in peace and live forever together,” Staples told The Dodo. “We transported Red Lady and we waited for the adoption and we were terrified we wouldn’t win the bid.”

When Goliath finally got to the sanctuary, he ran through the snow jubilantly, so happy to be free!

Days later, Red Lady got to the field, and Goliath could not hide his emotions when he saw her.

“Goliath spotted her and ran half a mile to her side in the snow,” Staples said. “She trotted to him, tail high, floating through the snow, and he immediately put his nose to her belly as if he knew she was carrying his baby.”

Earlier this month, Red Lady gave birth to a healthy foal, and the family could not be happier!
