Following tradition, an easel outside Buckingham Palace announced today that the newest addition to the Royal family has arrived. The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, has given birth to  her third child, a son, who joins older siblings George and Charlotte.

Middleton, 36, was taken around 6 a.m. to the private Lindo wing of St. Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London, and the announcement of the baby’s birth was made around 11 a.m. The announcement shared that the baby weighed 8 pounds 7 ounces, and both mother and baby are doing well.

The Duke of Cambridge, Prince William, was present at the baby’s birth and all members of the Royal family including Queen Elizabeth II, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, and Prince Harry. They are elated with the news of the arrival of the baby.

The medical team that took care of Kate during labor and the new arrival was announced by Kensington Palace as well. Surgeon gynecologist Guy Thorpe-Beeston and consultant gynecologist Alan Farthing cared for Kate, while Sunit Godambe, a neonatologist, cared for the new arrival. All were present during the births of George and Charlotte.

Excitement at the pending arrival of the baby had been building outside of the hospital for days. Fans had gathered quite a large crowd in anticipation for some 15 days in hopes of catching a glimpse of the baby when he leaves the hospital.

The timing of the announcement falls on St. George’s Day, which only added to the occasion for the crowd outside the hospital. The third pregnancy of the Duchess was announced last September, and people started anticipating the upcoming event at that time.

Kate had been hoping for a natural birth, just like she had with George and Charlotte. She also didn’t know whether she was having a boy or girl. It is likely that George and Charlotte will visit the hospital soon to see their mother and new sibling. They will likely be cared for by their live-in nanny, Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo until Kate returns home.

The Duchess of Cambridge suffered from severe morning sickness with this pregnancy. She went on maternity leave starting March 22, but was able to attend Easter Sunday church services with the Royal family on April 4.

Although the Queen has four children of her own, Prince William is the first future king to have more than two children in 120 years. Kate has laughingly said during her pregnancy that she thinks he was in shock at having a third child.
