In the crazy world of Hollywood, most celebrities are obsessed with fighting aging, as they want to look as young as possible at all times. The legendary star Candice Bergen of “Murphy Brown” fame, however, is not having any of it.
“I just don’t pay any attention to it,” she told Closer Weekly of aging. “I mean, it is what it is. And I don’t think there’s anything to be ashamed of in getting older.”
Those close to Bergen, 74, are not surprised at all that she has this attitude.
“Candice is an eternal optimist,” one insider said. “And her confidence has definitely increased with age. She’s learned not to be affected by fame and is comfortable with who she is.”
Bergen was not always this confident, however, as she struggled with her appearance in her early days in Hollywood.
“Doctors used to come up to me and say could they take a cast of my nose,” she recalled, adding that she did not like that she felt she was not taken seriously as a young actress.
“That’s all you are to people is what you look like,” Bergen explained.
Despite this, Bergen was able to persevere and find success in Hollywood. She scored an Oscar nomination for her work in the 1979 movie Starting Over before landing the iconic title role in the television show “Murphy Brown,” which she recently described as “the perfect character… she was appealing and annoying!”
When she isn’t acting, family has always been the most important thing to Bergen. She had one daughter Chloe with her first husband, director Louis Malle, and becoming a mother changed everything for her.
“The birth of my daughter was the greatest event in my life,” she said
Bergen now also has “the dumpling,” as she calls 6-month- old grandson Artie, and she says she could not be happier. She described Artie as “the best arrival of joy in one’s life.”
Bergen’s acting career is still going as strong as ever, as she’s garnering possible awards buzz for her work in the new HBO Max movie Let Them All Talk.
“It’s important for younger women to know that it’s not over until it’s over,” she said, going on to add that at any age, “Your life can be infinitely rich and engaging and sexy.”
