While filming the iconic 1977 movie Star Wars, actors Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford had an affair, but it was kept secret from their costar Mark Hamill until the end of filming for one reason.

Fisher was 19 years-old and Ford was 33 when they had a three month romance while playing the characters of Princess Leia and Han Solo in the classic movie. Fans had no idea of their affair until Fisher wrote about it in her 2016 memoir, “Princess Diarist.”

“A tiny part of me felt like I’d won the man lottery, and here I was both counting and spending the money,” Fisher wrote. “I looked over at Harrison. He was… God, he was just so handsome.”

Fisher added that she could “charm the birds out of everyone’s trees but his,” so she wrote in her diaries instead. After three months, she realized that Ford was not going to leave his wife for her, so she ended the affair.

It wasn’t until after filming ended that Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker in the movie, was told of the affair by Star Wars creator George Lucas’ wife, Marcia.

“I’m glad I didn’t know before, as it probably really would have affected me,” Hamill told The Guardian. “By the time I found out, I just thought it was hilarious. But you know men – even if we don’t want to have a relationship, it’s just in our nature to jockey for affection.”

Hamill was attracted to Fisher as well, but he knew it would be a bad idea to get romantically involved on set.

“But Carrie and I found pretexts,” Hamill recalled. “I remember one time – I’m sure alcohol was involved – we were talking about kissing techniques. I said: ‘Well, I think I’m a fairly good kisser. I like to let the women come to me rather than be aggressive.’ And she said: ‘What do you mean?’ Well, next thing you know, we’re making out like teenagers!”

However, the two quickly stopped and burst out laughing, never to try it again because Hamill believes they “got it out of their systems.”

Since this all happened during the filming of Star Wars, it seems whoever kept the affair from Hamill knew what they were doing!
