On Tuesday night, 15 year-old Carter Rubin was crowned the winner of “The Voice,” becoming the youngest male winner to ever win the show. Afterwards, Rubin spoke out to say that he is “still in shock,” and to give much of the credit for his win to the support of his coach, Gwen Stefani.
“I’m just so grateful and so blessed, because there’s been so many incredibly talented singers this season,” the teenager told Entertainment Tonight. “I think my win was due to Gwen’s coaching. She’s phenomenal.”
Rubin went on to add that his run on the show was a dream come true.
“It means everything and more,” he said. “I’m a huge fan of the show, I’ve been watching the show forever. I was just thinking back to literally a year ago, I was watching Gwen Stefani on TV and I was joking about it with my family, like, ‘Imagine that I get on the show and get to work with her and sing a duet with her,’ and literally, my dreams came true.”
Rubin added that Stefani is just as excited about his win as he is, and that she also can’t believe it really happened.
“We both did not believe what was happening. We’re both still trying to process it,” Rubin remembered. “We’ve built a very close bond. She’s so down to earth and so genuine… She definitely wanted the best for me, she’s worked so hard to get to this point. She just really believes in me, which means the world.”
Stefani was a teenager herself when she hit it big with her band No Doubt, so she has some pieces of career advice for Rubin. He said that she’s already told him that “this is the perfect time for me to start writing songs, and I completely agree.”
“I want to keep expanding on my music career,” Rubin added. “I plan on writing a lot of songs and getting in the studio and recording them, and once COVID is over I want to perform in front of live audiences again. I really miss the adrenaline you get from live performance.”
As for what he’ll do with his winnings from the show, Rubin hasn’t quite gotten that far yet!
“I haven’t thought much about it yet,” he confessed. “I want to spend it wisely, for sure, and I want to use it for good.”
