Nebraska couple Shalee and Andy Carter have a ten-year-old daughter, Elle but they were still ecstatic to find out that they were expecting again. The couple had used fertility treatments and finally had been able to conceive again. They were over the moon excited.

At Shalee’s six week doctor’s visit, the doctors had given them the good news. Doctors told the couple they were expecting triplets! The couple couldn’t have been more excited. But the doctors were wrong. At Shalee’s 18-week checkup, doctors revealed that she wasn’t pregnant with triplets, the couple was expecting four babies instead!

Because Shalee was expecting multiple babies, that labeled her pregnancy as high risk. To help protect her and the babies, Shalee was admitted to the hospital 52 days before her expected due date so that doctors could monitor the expectant mom and the soon to be newborn babies.

During Shalee’s 34th week of pregnancy it was time for the babies to make their entrance into the world. With 18 staff members present in the delivery room, one by one the babies made their grand appearance. Shalee says she didn’t even realize the doctor had cut her open for the c-section until she heard the babies begin to cry.

All of the babies came into this world healthy albeit small. Three boys and one girl had more than doubled the Carter family in size. Their birth wasn’t just a big deal to the family, but a big deal for the hospital as well. It was the first time in a decade that quadruplets had been delivered at the Nebraska hospital.

Although the babies spent some time in the neonatal intensive care unit, they are all now home and healthy. Alyssa, Miles, Carter, and Bentley are local celebrities in their town and keep mom, dad, and big sister Elle on their toes, but the family wouldn’t have it any other way.
