Prince Charles has found himself in hot water this week after he posted a video to social media in which he called on the British public to go back to the land amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. It did not take long for this move to blow up in his face.

In the video, which the heir to the British throne posted to his Twitter page, Charles urged students and furloughed workers to fill their time by doing “unglamorous” agricultural work and helping out farmers by picking fruits and vegetables.

“If we are to harvest British fruit and vegetables this year, we need an army of people to help,” Charles said. “Food does not happen by magic. It all begins with our remarkable farmers and growers. If the last few weeks have proven anything, it is that food is precious and valued and it cannot be taken for granted.”

“In the coming months, many thousands of people will be needed to bring in the crops. It will be hard graft but is hugely important if we are to avoid the growing crops going to waste,” the 71 year-old royal added. “I do not doubt that the work will be unglamorous and, at times, challenging, but it is of the utmost importance and at the height of this global pandemic you will be making a vital contribution to the national effort.”

This immediately backfired on Charles when he was hit with a barrage of backlash, with some pointing out that he was telling people to do something that is potentially dangerous during a pandemic. Others said it’s not a good look for a wealthy royal to be demanding that others take part in manual labor.

Who is going to provide the transport and housing?” one social media user asked, with another user writing, “Perhaps your family can get the approximately 700 staff you employ to go and pick in the fields and you can look after yourselves for once.”

That certainly did not go the way Charles planned!

This comes after a difficult time for Charles, who had to battle coronavirus himself last month after testing positive for it. Had he thought this through more, he might have realized that this probably was not the best way to reintroduce himself to the British public after that ordeal.
