When Roy and Bernita Rogers were married, they had plans to start a big family. The couple wanted a house full of children. Bernita quickly became pregnant, but she miscarried the baby. This would happen two more times before the couple finally began to believe that having a family just wasn’t going to happen for them.

Bernita says she felt like there was an empty place in her heart that would never be filled. Then one day, a little stray kitten wandered into the couple’s yard. It isn’t surprising that the couple adopted the kitten as their own and nurtured him the way they would have a child.

This all black kitten, named Midnight, wasn’t the bad luck charm that some people believe black cats to be. Instead, he seemed to be the exact opposite for the Rogers family. Within one year of Midnight’s arrival into the family, the couple found out that they were expecting a fourth time.

Unlike the other pregnancies, this baby was born strong and healthy. A little girl named Stacey was added to the family and the couple couldn’t have been more happy. Even Midnight seemed to adore the new addition to the family and kept a watchful eye over the baby.

Midnight had always been a cuddly, affectionate cat, so when one day Bernita heard strange noises coming from the baby monitor she feared what the cat was up to. Stacey had been ill, but the doctor had reassured Bernita that the child just had a cold and everything would be fine.

The doting mother had just laid Stacey down for a nap and went downstairs to join her family who was visiting from out of town. After Bernita settled in to visit, Midnight ran down the stairs and into her lap. She says he kept jumping off of her lap and running to the stairs and back and forth. She just thought he wanted attention and ignored his odd actions.

Finally, Midnight dashed up the stairs and within minutes, Bernita heard odd moaning and screeching sounds coming from the baby monitor in Stacey’s room. She ran up the stairs worried about what the cat was doing to her child. Instead what she found was nothing short of amazing.

Midnight had made the strange noises into the monitor to get Bernita’s attention because Stacey wasn’t breathing well and had turned blue. The cat new she needed help immediately. That is why he had been acting so strange. Bernita rushed Stacey to the hospital.

Luckily, Stacey received the treatment she needed just in time. Doctors were able to treat her for respiratory failure and save her life thanks to the quick actions of Midnight. Stacey is now a happy, healthy 12-year-old girl who says Midnight is her best friend. Without him, she likely wouldn’t be alive.
