Do you remember the HBO drama series “The Newsroom” starring Jeff Daniels? It launched back in 2012 and boy oh boy was it ahead of its time.
Will McAvoy ACN’s nightly news anchor played by Daniels hits the nail right on the head during the opening moments of the very first episode.
It’s the jaw dropping truth that would be a complete career ender in today’s day and age.
McAvoy along with two other panelists are asked a simple yet defining question: “What makes America the greatest country in the world?”
It becomes obvious early in the discussion that McAvoy is less than thrilled to be speaking since he only gives short and sarcastic answers. He then see’s a long time friend in the audience and changes his approach.
Initially Daniels’ character goes the politically correct route, but when the moderator asks for a “real human moment” from Will — he puts it all on the table. The anchor goes into an honest, bold, straight forward rant that sums up a lot of the worlds issues in addition to addressing common misconceptions about the system.
Before really diving into the monologue, however, he made sure to deem the “sorority girl” a member of the WORST PERIOD, GENERATION PERIOD, EVER PERIOD.
Then he redeems himself by saying, “It sure used to be… We stood up for what was right. We fought for moral reason. We passed laws, struck down laws, for moral reason. We waged wars on poverty, not on poor people. We sacrificed, we cared about our neighbors, we put our money where our mouths were and we never beat our chest.
We built great, big things, made ungodly technological advances, explored the universe, cured diseases and we cultivated the world’s greatest artists AND the world’s greatest economy. We reached for the stars, acted like men. We aspired to intelligence, we didn’t belittle it. It didn’t make us feel inferior. We didn’t identify ourselves by who we voted for in the last election and we didn’t scare so easy.
We were able to be all these things and do all these things because we were informed … by great men, men who were revered. First step in solving any problem is recognizing there is one. America is not the greatest country in the world anymore.”
