A text that was mistakenly sent to a stranger ended up leading to him going above and beyond to help the family of a young boy fighting for his life.

Noah Jakeman is a 4 year-old boy from Arizona who was admitted to the ICU at Phoenix Children’s Hospital with respiratory failure and placed on life support last week after he experienced a seizure. Alex and Shaun Jakeman, Noah’s parents, have been by his side ever since.

Noah has been diagnosed with a severe form of epilepsy called Lennox Gasteau Syndrome, and he also autism, abnormal brain development and brittle bones that have left him unable to walk independently. Abby Fink, a friend of the family, had tried to send a text to Shaun offering to drop off some food, but she ended up sending it to the wrong person instead.

“Hey brother Jakeman, this is sister Fink, we are bringing you dinner tomorrow I was wondering what time would be a good time to bring it over,” Abby wrote in the text meant for Shaun, which went to a different phone number due to one wrong digit. The text went to a man named Bill, who decided to joke around with her.

“Oh what are you bringing me, I don’t like seafood,” Bill responded.

Abby was confused at first, but when she realized she had sent the text to the wrong number, she explained it was meant for a family whose child was in the ICU. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Bill felt compelled to help the family out. Abby suggested that he pray for them, but Bill wanted to do more than that, so he started raising money for the Jakemans on Facebook. He asked his friends on the site to donate cards and gifts so that Noah would feel supported when he woke up.

“All we have is each other, so it’s our job to look out for each other,” Bill said. “[The situation] made me realize that no matter how hard that can be, I’m super lucky… My biggest reward for this is having an opportunity to teach my son the lesson of charity.”

Bill’s kindness towards the Jakemans has left Alex, Shaun, and Abby all stunned.

“I told him he was an angel,” Abby said of Bill. “Sent to help this sweet family.”

“It’s amazing,” Alex added. “He is a total stranger and he just wanted to jump into action.”
