A 52-year-old plumber is being hailed as a hero after he quit his paying job to get into doing free plumbing and home repair services for senior citizens and families in need, especially in the winter months.

James Anderson was first inspired to do this back in 2017, when he saw another plumber treating an elderly customer “poorly.” Immediately after this experience, James started his nonprofit Disabled and Elderly Plumbing and Heating Emergency Repair (Depher).

Since then, James and his small team of workers have repaired boilers, plumbing fixtures, and heating systems for 2,500 seniors and low-income homeowners all over Lancashire, England, and they’ve done all of this completely free of charge.

James, who is a father of five children, has financed this through online crowdfunding donations and paid jobs from customers who want to support his mission. Even so, he has racked up £8,000 ($9,800) in personal debt since he launched his labor of love, although he insists that the debt is “under control.”

“A lot of people close to me ask: why are you getting yourself in to debt? Why are you doing this? ‘To me, debt is debt,” James said. “I would rather owe some money to somebody and another person be alive and happy and safe.”

After a photo of one of the invoices of James’ team went viral, they have been flooded with donations from people all over the world. The invoice was for a boiler repair that James did for a 91-year-old woman suffering from acute leukemia, and he wrote on it that the senior was not to be charged for the repairs “under any circumstances.”

With winter on it’s way, James is gearing up to perform free heating jobs for even more seniors. If you would like to help him out, check out the Disabled & Elderly FREE Plumbing & Heating Service page on Crowdfunder.
