A New Hampshire woman is fighting the state’s Department Of Motor Vehicles after she was told to surrender her vanity license plate because of a common parental phrase: PB4WEGO.

Wendy Auger was stunned when she received a letter from the DMV telling her to turn in the plate, which she has had for 15 years. The letter explained to her that phrases involving bodily functions are forbidden on plates.

Wendy, who is a bartender in the Gonic neighborhood of Rochester, is fighting the ban on the phrase “Pee before we go” because she sees this as a case of free speech.

“Who has a mom or dad or parental figure who hasn’t said that to kids before leaving the house?” Wendy said. “I’m not the type to sit here with a picket, but come on.”

Wendy’s supporters have pointed out that this situation is particularly ironic given the fact that the state’s motto is “Live Free Or Die.” She added that “it would just stink” if she was relieved of her plate, which she still has until a final decision is made.

“If I have to take it off the plate, then I’m not going to be able to live free,” she said, going on to add that she often receives complimentary honks from drivers who get a kick out of her plate. Wendy had wanted to get this plate for years, and she “jumped on it” when the state expanded its character limit to from six to seven, allowing her to fit it.

The state explained in a statement that the rules regarding “were forced to be changed years ago by the NH Supreme Court as a result of a court order and now the rules are very specific.”

Wendy has said that she was never asked what her plate actually meant before she got this notice, pointing out that she could easily claim it refers to peanut butter or praying. She also believes that “talking about peeing isn’t offensive.”

“Where do you draw the line?” she said.
