Nicole Leth was just a teenager when she lost her father to suicide. Now, she does everything in her power to make sure that nobody else goes through what her family has suffered through.

One of the things Nicole has done is put up a billboard in Kansas City, Missouri, with an encouraging message on it.

“You are human. You are loveable. You are strong. You are enough,” the billboard reads.

Nicole was only 17 when her father Richard committed suicide. He had battled alcoholism for years, and things just unraveled from there. After he died, Nicole promised herself she’d devote her life to putting positive things in the world and spreading love.

“For years, I tried doing this through putting positive messages on stickers, and spray-painting buildings, and I had the idea of the billboard and it never seemed like the right time,” said Nicole, 26.

Nicole decided to put up the billboard two months ago, and she thought carefully about what exactly she wanted to put on it.

“Those are words that I say to myself when I am having a hard day and those are words that I wish I could have said to my dad,” Nicole said. “They are simple enough that everyone understands. They are words that help people see their inherent worth.”

Though she originally planned to put up the billboard anonymously, she ended up posting a photo of it on Facebook, and it quickly went viral.

“I’ve gotten hundreds of messages,” Nicole said. “People coming up in my yoga classes or on the street telling me it saved their lives. They told me it helped them feel better and that they could keep going.”

Nicole is now planning to put up a different inspirational message each month to honor her father.

“He was my best friend,” she said. “Him and I were totally the same person. … He had a really big heart.”
