A 16 year-old boy from Georgia is being hailed as a hero after saving all of the Clydesdale horses that were trapped in a burning barn.

It all started when the home of the Martin family was struck by lightning in the middle of the night.

“It shook the whole house,” Shannon Martin recounted. “One minute I am in bed; the next minute I am standing up next to the bed trying to figure out what happened.”

Within seconds, flames engulfed the family’s horse barn, which was locked at the time. Without hesitating, 16 year-old Macon leapt to action to save his beloved horses.

“I just ran right out. I had no clothes on, no shoes, no nothing,” Macon said. “I just jumped in our Gator and I just ran it right into the door.”

“He busted through like Rambo and opened up the end of the stalls and said, ‘Mom, this way,'” Shannon added. “And we were able to push the horses out that way.”

While all 14 horses made it out uninjured, the barn burned to the ground. Though the barn is gone, the Martins are just happy that their horses and family members are all alright.

“It will take some time to rebuild,” Shannon lamented. “This was a dream. We saved and built it brick by brick. We’ll have to start over.”

Thankfully, the Martins still have their horses to start over with them.

“Big horses everybody thinks (are) real tough,” she said, “but Clydes are sort of the beauty queens of the draft horse world. They can be pretty fragile.”
