The specific, rare dime is called the 1894-S Barber Dime, and it is believed that John Daggett, the superintendent of the San Francisco Mint, had 24 of these dimes minted in that year. He reportedly gave three of them to his young daughter, telling her to save them until she was older, but she instead used them immediately to buy an ice cream.

Experts say that nine 1894-S Barber Dimes, and while most of them are accounted for, two of them are still missing and are believed to be floating around the United States somewhere. In some state, Americans are using these dimes on various knick knacks, having no idea how valuable they really are.

If you think you might have one of these dimes, you should go to a coin appraiser immediately. If they tell you that you do indeed have one of the actual dimes, you could be in for a huge pay day. Back in 2016, one of these rare dimes sold to an anonymous buyer for $1,997,500. That’s quite a lot more than the ten cents that you would think it was worth!
