These days, it often seems like only negative stories about police officers make the news. We want to share a positive story about a police officer’s good deed that is going viral right now.

Officer Mike Kelly was shopping at his local Walmart in Cleveland, Tennessee when he saw a father and his four children struggling to pay for their groceries at the register. What he did next had a fellow shopper take notice and praise the cop on social media.

“Just witnessed an another extraordinary act by our men and women in uniform,” the unnamed bystander wrote in the post. “A police officer paid for the groceries of a customer here at Walmart. The best part, the customer told the police officer ‘God bless you’ and the police officer responded ‘I am already blessed.’ I love you.”

The post quickly went viral and was brought to the attention of the police department.

“Scrolling through random Facebook posts and then see this one that makes us ALL proud to be Cleveland police officers,” the department wrote on Facebook. They then received a description of the officer and after hearing he was “6’5 and buff” they were able to narrow down the search.

“[We] deducted it was School Resource Officer Mike Kelly,” the department explained.

Kelly said that he was working a security job at the Walmart when he saw the struggling dad and had to intervene.

“I just felt God telling me — saying ‘Just go help him. We’re getting extra money to be [here].’ And I’m just like ‘Are these people going to go hungry when I’m just sitting here making a little extra money for myself?'” he said, adding that he is hoping his act of kindness will inspire others.

“It is guaranteed that Kelly wouldn’t want the credit from this, but it’s these random acts of kindness that inspire US ALL to be kind to others!” the Cleveland Police department stated.
