Even though cataracts are one of the most common and treatable forms of blindness, hundreds of thousands of people in Nepal still suffer from them. That’s why one doctor has taken it upon himself to restore their vision.

Dr. Sanduk Ruit is an ophthalmologist who has spent years hiking all over Nepal performing cataract surgeries. Taking his surgical equipment along with him, Ruit often embarks on 7-day long hikes for the sole purpose of doing the surgeries. Since he first started doing this, Ruit has restored vision to over 130,000 people!

Ruit serves as the executive director of the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology, a nonprofit in Kathmandu that caters to as many as 1 million patients. Ruit has said that around 90% of the world’s blind population is located in Nepal. The reason behind this is that there are fewer eye doctors in countries that are less developed, and because cataract lenses previously had to be imported from international manufacturers, which increased the cost of the lenses to as much as $300. Because Ruit has been able to source cataract lenses locally, however, they now cost just $3 each.

Social media users have been praising Ruit for all that he has done for the people of Nepal.

“Dr. Ruit is a good human along with being an excellent surgeon,” one social media user commented. “A huge respect to such a great personality. Thank you for the gift of beauty and the return for eternity in many people’s lives. An inspiration to all.”
