A British diver who was trying to show people that they don’t need to travel to the other side of the world to experience incredible marine life just had an amazing encounter with a giant barrel jellyfish.

Dan Abbott was in the water filming marine life off the coast of Falmouth, Cornwall when he came upon the enormous jellyfish. Dan was left speechless by the jellyfish, and he snapped a photo of biologist Lizzie Daly, who is the host of BBC Earth, swimming alongside it to show just how big the creature was.

“It’s the biggest jellyfish I’ve ever seen, in some ways I was shocked—but not in a negative way, more awestruck,” he said. “It was an incredible animal, we both came out the water completely mind blown from that experience.”

Dan and Lizzie had spent the entire week traveling to marine life hot spots around the British isles on a trip called Wild Ocean Week. On this trip, the pair swam with grey seals off the Farne Islands, off the coast of Northumberland, minke whales off the north west coast of Scotland, and seabirds off Wales. As they travelled, they also raised money for the Marine Conservation Society.

“The thing that this whole week has been about is there’s plenty on our doorstep,” Dan said. “Cornwall was nice and warm for diving—and because of the jellyfish, that was my favorite part (of the trip).”

Dan and Lizzie certainly did prove their point that there is incredible marine life in Britain!
