A college student at the University of Minnesota is being hailed as a hero after he saved the life of a 71 year-old man by performing CPR on him.

Jacob Erdman was in the lobby of a building on campus when he saw an elderly man named Mike Vaughan clutch his chest and collapse from a heart attack. Without hesitating, Jacob immediately rushed to take action.

“It’s definitely not a pretty sight when you see someone who direly needs your help, but that’s even more of a reason to forget your feelings and help them,” Jacob said.

As other students called 911, Jacob rushed over to the man and began performing CPR, which he’d learned while training for an on-campus security position.

Bob Vaughan, Mike’s brother, said that he likely would have died before getting to the hospital were it not for Jacob. Thanks to Jacob’s actions, Mike’s family were able to say their last goodbyes to him in the hospital while he was still alive. He tragically passed away two weeks after the heart attack.

“He was given every opportunity to survive by the students and faculty, that, not even knowing who he was, put forth all this effort to save his life,” Bob said.

Though Jacob is being praised as a hero, he does not see what he did as a huge deal.

“I knew what I needed to do, others helped out and I just found the AED and got to work,” he said. “I don’t know how else to think about it other than that.”

The Vaughan family, however, disagrees.

“A lot of times, family members don’t get the chance to say goodbye, and that could’ve been the case for our family too,” Bob said. “What they did, trying to extend his life, allowed us and his family to say goodbye to him.”

Jacob is just happy that he was there to help, saying, “I did what anyone could’ve done.”
