An 18 year-old from India just died in a disturbing medical case that is making headlines around the world.

It all started when the teenager went to the emergency room complaining about a sharp and sudden pain in his groin. He was also suffering major seizures, and by the time he got to the hospital, he was in a dazed and confused state with swelling over his eye.

Doctors gave him a series of tests that confirmed the presence of lesions in his brain and cysts in his right eye and groin. Though they tried everything they could to save his life, the unnamed teen ended up passing away.

Doctors eventually discovered that the teen had neurocysticercosis, which is a parasitic infection of the central nervous system. It turns out that the young man had parasites in his brain, and the cysts that doctors had found at first were actually larval cysts formed by tapeworm eggs that had spread throughout his brain and into other parts of his body.

Neurocysticercosis is an infection that occurs when a person consumes a tapeworm while eating undercooked food.

“Tapeworm is a parasite that can cause infection in humans after eating undercooked or raw pork or beef,” explained pediatric gastroenterologist Dr. Bridget Dowd. “The more common infection that can happen is a mild illness. You might not have any symptoms or you can have nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.”

Down went on to say that there are two types of this infection; one that can be easily treated with antiparasitic medications and another that can lead to more serious issues.

“This is unusual in the U.S.,” Dowd said. “It typically happens in the developing world where cattle and swine are grazing in a field with human feces.”
