It has just been announced that Queen Elizabeth will be giving up driving in public two months after her 97 year-old husband Prince Philip was involved in a car crash that injured a young mother.

Though the Queen, who is turning 93 later this month, is the only person in the United Kingdom who is allowed to drive without a license, she has reportedly agreed to give up the practice after her security team advised her to do so.

The Queen has been known to enjoy driving in her fleet of cars that include Land Rovers and Jaguars in the past. However, concerns grew over whether the Queen should continue to drive after her husband Philip’s Land Rover rolled over when it was hit by a Kia back in January. One day later, the Queen made headlines when she was seen driving without a seatbelt.

Sir Sherard Cowper-Coles, a former ambassador to Saudi Arabia, recalled an anecdote in his memoir that shows just how much the Queen loved to drive.

“After lunch, the Queen had asked her royal guest whether he would like a tour of the estate,” he wrote. “To his surprise the Queen climbed into the driving seat, turned the ignition and drove off…”

“Abdullah was not used to being driven by a woman, let alone a queen,” he continued. “Through his interpreter, the Crown Prince implored the Queen to slow down and concentrate on the road ahead.”

While it was likely a difficult decision for the Queen to give up driving, it was definitely the right one, as she can certainly afford chauffeurs to drive her around. The incident with Philip back in January shows that at her age, it might be better to be safe than sorry.
