All of us have thought about what we’d do if we won the lottery, and while many have said that they would give their money to charity, few actually do that when they end up winning. That’s why it’s so great that the recent lottery winner of the historic $1.5 billion prize is putting her money where her mouth is in a big way!
Last year, an anonymous woman from South Carolina won the $1.5 billion Mega Millions jackpot in what was the largest lottery payout in U.S. history. Afterwards, the woman chose not to release her name and opted to receive a lump sum of $878 million.
Last month, 23 people were killed in the devastating tornadoes that occurred in Alabama. Now, it’s been revealed that the anonymous lottery winner is donating some of her winnings to help the victims of this natural disaster.
“I do realize that such good fortune carries a tremendous social responsibility, and it gives me a unique opportunity to assist, support and contribute to charities and causes that are close to my heart,” the lottery winner said in a statement.
Though he did not say exactly how much she was donating, the woman’s lawyer Jason Kurland described it as a “substantial amount.”
“All the charities were extremely happy,” Kurland said.
Jason added that the anonymous lottery winner bought her ticket on a whim after seeing signs for the jackpot on South Carolina’s Highway 417.
“She decided to take a chance and purchase a ticket, never once thinking she had the slightest chance to win,” Jason said.
God bless this woman for having a compassionate and charitable heart!
