Losing a child is one of the most difficult things a parent can go through, and this is sadly the position that Rajashree Patil found herself in when her son died of cancer. Afterwards, the 49 year-old mother launched a controversial plan to “reincarnate” her dead son that has since made headlines around the globe.

Using her dead son’s sperm, Rajashree conceived twins.

Rajashree’s son Prathamesh was in school getting a master’s degree in Germany when he was diagnosed with brain cancer. He underwent surgery for the cancer in 2013, but prior to this, he had his sperm samples stored.

Prathamesh managed to beat the cancer once, but it returned in 2016 and he tragically passed away later that year. Before his death, he put his mother and sister in charge of his sperm samples, and Rajashree soon realized that this presented her with a prime opportunity to “get her son back.”

Rajashree was disappointed when doctors told her that she was not a candidate for IVF, but a 35 year-old relative agreed to carry the babies. The relative was inseminated with an anonymous egg donor’s fertilized eggs, and she gave birth to twin babies last Monday.

“I was carrying the soul of my son in me and was looking for a body to breathe it into,” Rajashree said. “Doctors had preserved my son’s semen before they commenced cancer treatment to preempt any negative effects of the medicine used on him. Due to this I have been able to get my son back.”

Rajashree would like to be known as the twins’ mother rather than their grandmother.

“Getting the semen into our custody was not easy and we faced a lot of hurdles. Money and time were serious issues but now I will take the responsibility of these infants,” she said. “I am their mother now.”

Dr. Supriya Puranik, head of IVF department at Sahyadri Hospital, said that he was happy to help her “relive moments of happiness.”

“At hospitals, we often see a lot of emotions and happiness whenever a woman delivers a baby and we have come to share in their moments of joy. But in this case it was a grief-stricken mother whose son was away for studies when he came down with the fatal disease and succumbed to it,” the doctor said. “We appreciate the kind of spirit she has shown throughout the process and congratulate her on having her son back in the form of these healthy twin babies.”
