A few British companies have come together to help the homeless population in Bristol, England in a beautiful way.

Help Bristol’s Homeless is a non-profit group that teamed up with property company Colliers International, gas and electricity supplier EDF Energy, Barratt Homes, and construction company Balfour Beatty to turn shipping containers into homes for the homeless. The project was started by Army veteran Jasper Thompson in 2017 and it has been a huge success!

Each shipping container includes a lounge, kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom. Many say that the homes are prettier than traditional houses!

Jasper, who owns a Jamaican diner, has said that the key to this project is getting homeless people involved in building their communities.

Each person who is given a home is thoroughly vetted by Jasper.

“Everyone has to be safe and they have to be vetted, but we will make sure they are supported,” he said. “If they are on a programme for addiction, we’ll make sure they keep doing that.”

One homeless man named Paul opened up about how much he loves his shipping container home.

“…at this place you’re treated like a human being,” he said. “We’ve developed skills and if you’ve got a problem you can talk to people – the support system here is second to none and everyone who comes here is treated equally.”

This project has been so successful that many other cities are looking into doing similar things as well. We applaud Jared and his team for coming up with such a great way to help the homeless!
