A group of hunters from Childress, Texas just got the fright of their lives when a rattlesnake that they thought was dead started uncoiling on their grill!

Video footage that has quickly gone viral features Rick Nolan showing off the hunters’ “dinner” that his son Tim and a friend named “Big John” Washburn are preparing.

“Good times in west Texas,” Rick captioned the video, which has been viewed over three million times.

Rick explained that the hunters had been getting ready for a deer hunt when Big John saw the rattlesnake and killed it. Once they had skinned and gutted the snake, they decided to eat it for dinner. When the snake was on the grill, however, it started to uncoil as if it was still alive to the shock of the hunters.

“Close that lid on him,” one of the men yells, as another adds, “He’s gonna flop out!”

One of the hunters then says that the snake is “trying to strike.”

“Golly, he is,” the cook exclaims. “I don’t know what to do.”

Finally, Tim manages to use the tongs to hold the snake in place as his fellow hunters use steak spices on the reptile, who is still moving. They consider closing the lid on the snake, but one of them says that he will come “flying off” when they open it if they do that.

“Eventually he’s gonna die,” one of the men says, to which one responds, “Surely he’s dead by now!”

Eventually, the hunters won out and were able to enjoy eating the snake, who had put up quite a valiant fight. Steven Beaupré, a professor of biology at the University of Arkansas, explained that some dead reptiles can still move even after death because their nerves are still functioning.

“Snakes in general are well known for retaining reflexes after death,” he said. “Just because the animals has been decapitated, that doesn’t mean the nerves have stopped functioning.”
