Teachers are some of the most kind and generous people on the planet, as their jobs go far beyond what happens in the classroom. Teachers have to not only prepare classroom curriculums and grade papers, they also have to plan school events and be there for their students emotionally as well.
Unless teachers are in some kind of national competition, their efforts are rarely noticed by anyone outside of their local communities. That’s why it came as a surprise to this teacher when he was recognized after a touching video of him went viral.

Jonathan Oliver is a physical education teacher and coach at WG Nunn Elementary School in Valdosta, Georgia. One day, just before a basketball game, Kindergartner Kristen Paulk walked up to Jonathan and asked him if he would mind tying her hair in a ponytail. He had no idea that his assistant teacher Kandice Anderson was filming him as he took a knee to tie Kristen’s hair back.
Kandice later posted the video to social media along with the caption, “When your job goes beyond teaching… #CoachO #Love”

The video immediately went viral, being viewed over three million times. Jonathan was even featured on “Good Morning America,” where he said he was stunned by all the attention that it got.
“It was shocking to me that it got that much attention because we all do it,” he said.
Though it was just a ponytail to Jonathan, to others it was a symbol of teachers going above and beyond for their students.

Jonathan is a father of three, so he is no stranger to making ponytails for his kids. Kristen’s mother also appeared on “Good Morning America” to praise him for doing her daughter’s hair.
