On Sunday night, legendary singer Gladys Knight took the field to perform before the Super Bowl. The move was a brave one for Knight, as many had been calling on singers and performers to boycott the Super Bowl in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick.

Knight, however, decided to brave the backlash to perform the national anthem in the hopes of bringing our divided country together. It’s safe to say that she accomplished this goal in a big way!

The 74 year-old singer took the field wearing a gorgeous caped white dress, and she proceeded to give a performance of “The Star Spangled Banner” that left many in tears. As she sang, the camera panned the field, showing fans and players alike standing respectfully for the anthem. It then showed our nation’s servicemen and women standing as they watched the performance while serving overseas.

At a time when our country often seems more divided than ever, Knight gave a performance that we could all enjoy together. This show of unity at the Super Bowl was something that Americans everywhere desperately needed right now!

Social media users have praised Knight for her performance, calling it one of the best national anthem performances ever.

“The best performance of the Anthem I have seen. Class act,” one social media user wrote, with another adding, “Amazing. Gladys Knight made it about (1) The Country (2) The Game (3) Fans and (4) Her . . . in THAT ORDER. Refreshingly unusual.”

“What an amazing inspiring singer!! God bless her God bless America!” a third user wrote.
