Earlier this month, 97 year-old Prince Philip made headlines when he was in a serious car crash near the royals’ Sandringham estate. Now, it’s been revealed that 92 year-old Queen Elizabeth has been begging Philip to stop driving for years, but he has refused to give up his license.
Philip was driving a Land Rover when he hit a Kia sedan as he left the royal estate, causing his vehicle to flip over. A witness overheard the prince telling responding police officers that he had been “dazzled by the sun” when he pulled out onto the road and hit the sedan.
Though nobody was seriously hurt in the accident (one woman was left with a broken wrist), the incident embarrassed the Queen. Meanwhile, Philip did not seem too phased by it, as he was pictured behind the wheel of a car less than 48 hours after the crash.
“Philip is a law unto himself,” one royal source said. “The Queen and Prince Charles have pleaded with him to stop driving on public roads. Charles particularly thinks it’s too dangerous, but Philip won’t be told. He loves the freedom he gets from being on the road, and he doesn’t want to be driven around. There is really only one person he listens to and that’s the Queen, and while I know she has had words in the past, I’m not sure she would ever insist he stops driving.”
After the crash, Philip was required to take an eye exam given by the police, and he passed it. This means that legally, he can still drive a car at this time. Do you think it’s time for him to stop driving? Let us know in the comments section.
