After 30 years of living on the streets of California, Mick Myers had all but given up hope that someone would ever help him get back on his feet. After decades of being homeless and ignored by everyone around him, Mick had become a self-described loner who spent his days panhandling on the highway.

The only love Mick had ever known had come from his adopted mother, and the only joy he found from his later life came from playing music outside a train station in the hopes of earning some money.

Deputy Jacob Swalwell of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Department had seen Mick around town numerous times, as he often warned him to stop begging for money, as the practice is illegal. One day, however, Jacob decided to stop and chat with Mick about his life rather than write him a citation for panhandling.

Jacob quickly learned that at 67 years-old, Mick had no social security, no identification cards and no one to help him. Mick’s story touched his heart, and Jacob knew he had to do whatever he could to help get this man’s life back on track.

After three trips with Mick to the DMV, Jacob was finally able to get him a valid ID, which in turn made it easy to get him Medicaid and social security benefits. Jacob then enlisted a private investigator to help him find Mick’s birth family.

It took some work, but the investigator eventually tracked Mick’s birth family down a whopping 250 miles away. After 60 years, Mick was finally reunited with the birth family he had spent a lifetime dreaming of, all thanks to the efforts of one devoted police officer!

Watch their touching reunion below, and SHARE this story so your friends and family can see it as well!
