While driving down the road, workers from an India-based rescue organization spotted a calf abandoned on the side of the road. The animal rescue workers from Animal Aid Unlimited weren’t sure why the baby had been left there to die, but it was obvious the calf needed immediate attention or her fate was certain death. They knew what they had to do.

The workers stopped along the road and quickly started caring for the baby. She was so skinny and unkempt that every one of her ribs were showing. When workers picked her up, she was too weak to even notice or try to fight them off. They wrapped her in a blanket, loaded her into the truck, and headed towards the animal sanctuary.

The workers believe that the calf’s mother might have died giving birth to her and that her owner didn’t want to have to pay for milk to take care of her so they abandoned her instead. Whatever the reason she had been left on the side of the road, she was about to get the care she had been needing.

Once arriving at the sanctuary, the little calf was given the name Merry. She was examined and started on IV fluids to give her much needed hydration. She was offered an abundance of milk which she took a little at a time. For four days, Merry showed very little progress, and then finally on the fifth day, Merry began showing progress.

The fifth day, although she was still wobbly and weak, Merry stood up and began walking. With the love and tenderness of the staff, Merry finally started exploring her new surroundings. They say little by little, Merry has developed in to a healthy, happy go lucky calf that she should have been all along.

Workers at the sanctuary say she now spends her days running around the sanctuary like a puppy and she’s made several new friends in the herd of cattle that she’s now a part of. Merry will spend the rest of her life at the sanctuary where she will get all the love, food, and care that she deserves.
