Doctors have been left completely puzzled by a mystery illness that left a 15 year-old girl from Missouri blinded after she returned home from a cruise. On top of that, the disease has taken away her sense of taste and smell.

Jordyn Walker embarked on a cruise with her family in July of 2017, and she seemed to enjoy the experience. It was only when she returned home that Jordyn started experiencing stomach pain and bloody stools.

“It went haywire from there,” Jordyn said. “Everything started swelling.”

She initially went to doctors in North Carolina, where the cruise had docked, and all tests were inconclusive. Doctors told Jordyn that she likely had a sinus infection and sent her on her way. By the time the family got back to their Kansas City home, however, Jordyn had lost her sense of taste and smell. Once again she went to the doctor, but medical officials didn’t find anything wrong with her.

“Everything came back normal,” said her mother, Kendyll Walker.

Jordyn’s symptoms started to subside little by little, and while she still had no sense of taste or smell, doctors confidently told her family that there was a “one in a million”chance that wouldn’t reoccur. Last month, however, the illness came back with a vengeance.

“My whole face just turned purple and bruised and giant with blood,” Jordyn said.

She was rushed to University of Kansas Hospital and spent the next 16 days there, undergoing surgery to relieve the swelling that had concentrated around her eyes.

“It was terrifying to watch it happen all over again and knowing that we couldn’t do anything about it,” Kendyll said.

After three days of tests, doctors determined that Jordyn would be permanently blind.

“Doctors believe that the blood flow to the optic nerve was compromised, severely damaging one nerve and completely destroying the other,” her GoFundMe page states. “Her right eye experienced what in the brain would be similar to a stroke, obliterating her optic nerve and causing severe damage to the retina. The substantial pressure in both eyes stretched the optic nerve, completely separating it from her right eye and compromising it beyond repair in the left.”

After all that has happened, doctors still have no idea what her illness is.

“There’s no answers. There’s nothing they could do,” her mother said.

Despite this setback, Jordyn is determined to get back to her passions in life, which are archery and photography.

“I’m not going to let this stop me,” she said defiantly.

Please keep this brave young girl in your thoughts and prayers!
