While it isn’t completely unusual for bears to be spotted around areas where humans hang out, it isn’t every day that these big creatures find their way inside of a building.
Most of the time we hear stories of them invading an outdoor camp site because they have smelled food, or digging in someones trash left out by the garage. But that isn’t the case with this story. A few California Highway Patrol officers got quite a surprise when a North American black bear paid them a surprise visit.
The air was probably filled with the sound of keyboards clicking, copy machines and printers humming, and people talking on the phone. But then all of a sudden, something else was heard among the usual business bustle.
A full grown bear, who seems to have handled human door knobs before by the way he easily opened it up and came on in, found himself right in the middle of the Truckee, California, Highway Patrol Department. The bear entered on two feet then proceeded to walk around the room, sniffed around the vending machine, and then took off down the hall. Eventually, it found its way into a room where two officers were working.

The men knew they had to act fast to get the bear out the same door that it had come in to. Rather than causing a scene, the two officers let the bear wander back out the door in it’s own time and through the parking lot back to the woods.
As the bear makes its way through the parking lot, it stops to take a peak in a dumpster and then finally proceeds back to where it came from. No one was hurt, including the bear, and nothing was damaged or taken by the bear either.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife says the state has a black bear population of about 40,000 and encounters with them isn’t uncommon. But do you know what to do if you run in to one?

You may want to run, but that is not the best bet. Sudden movements will provoke the bear to attack according to the National Park Service. Instead, speak calmly and slowly walk away while facing the bear.
After getting out of immediate danger, contact the relevant authorities so they can deal with the situation. Bears aren’t vicious creatures according to the experts. Attacking you isn’t likely what is on their mind. So if you keep calm and leave slowly you will likely be okay.
