For as long as John Dorroh can remember, his mom would vanish every day on Christmas Eve for a few hours. No one really knew where she was going, but she always came home like she said she would. She always told the family that she was running a few important errands and up until recently, John, now age 63, never had any idea what his mother was up to in those few hours that she was gone.
When his mom, Sue, passed away, John finally discovered what his mother had been up to. She wasn’t really running errands, so to speak. Instead, she was running a very special mission. John found out about his mother’s secret mission when he received a letter in the mail from a stranger named Robert. Robert had been a coworker of Sue and had a very special relationship with John’s mother.

It wasn’t anything like you are thinking, but instead John found out that his mother had been a bit of an angel. Although his mother did her Christmas shopping for her own family in August, she always had to run this Christmas eve errand.
When reading the letter from Robert, John finally got an answer about what his mother had been doing. She had a heart so big that John could never have imagined what was taking place.
The letter explained that every year on Christmas Eve day, Sue would go to Robert’s house dressed like Mrs. Claus and give his kids a Christmas that they wouldn’t otherwise have been able to afford.

She would bring them shoes, shirts, jeans, toys, and candy and continued the mission for the rest of her life. The letter went on to explain that they loved Sue very much, miss her, and wanted John to know everything his mother did for them.
John couldn’t believe what he was reading. He didn’t understand why his mother had kept the mission secret for years, the letter was still the best gift he could have ever received. John wrote a story called “Mom’s Secret Mission” that has now been published in the book “Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Joy of Christmas.” Sue is finally getting the recognition that she deserved.
