As a way to put a few extra dollars in her pocket, Patty Polley took the job as a crossing guard at Babson Park Elementary School. The 68-year-old grandma is now quite the celebrity.
Known as Ms. Patty to the students that she sees every day, Patty treats her students as if each and every one of them is her own grandchild. She says she has fallen in love with all her “little human beings.”
“It’s not even a job. It’s somewhere I love to go. I actually miss them in the summer,” says Patty. That love for her students is what spurred her to do something very special for them.
When the temperatures dropped, Patty noticed that some of the kids weren’t quite dressed for the weather. So she went home, picked up some yarn, and began knitting. She didn’t just knit gloves though for the kids she knew needed them. Instead, she made them for every single child that she helps get safely to and from school.
The families of Ms. Patty’s students were shocked by the kind gesture and reached out to let Patty’s boss know how amazing their employee was. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office immediately responded.
The post they shared on social media thanked everyone who posted on Facebook and sent the department private messages about their school crossing guard. They shared a photo of Ms. Patty.

Now Patty says although she enjoys her fame, it isn’t about her. “Believe me, those kids give me way more than I could ever give them,” said Patty.
What a heartwarming story! If you agree, be sure to share it with your family and friends.
