Chaos erupted on a New Jersey highway last Thursday morning after an armored truck dropped cash all over the road, causing people to get out of their cars and grab as much cash as they could.
The incident occurred at around 8:30am, when the East Rutherford Police Department started receiving calls that a truck was spilling cash on Route 3 West. The truck’s door had broken, and while guards frantically tried to fix it, people started grabbing whatever cash they could.
“Approx 8:30am ERPD received calls of an armored truck spilling cash along Rt 3 West, motorists exited vehicles attempting to remove cash causing multiple MV Crashes. Detectives are investigating,” the police department tweeted.

East Rutherford Police Capt. Phil Taormina said that even drivers on the opposite side of the 12-lane highway were seen jumping over the divider to retrieve the money. Two accidents were caused in the process.
Police are now urging people to give back whatever cash they grabbed.
“You can be arrested for this,” Taormina said. “It would be like theft of mislaid goods.”
Taormina then explained that the money legally belonged to Brinks, and that at the time of the incident, the truck was “parked on the shoulder and two armed guards, Brinks employees, were trying to gather the money.”
“We have had several individuals contact ERPD & return money in this case,” the department tweeted. “We would like to advise people if they have any money connected to this incident to contact ERPD at 201-438-0165 to make arrangements for its return with no charges filed.”
