Vincent Seals has been cleaning subway cars at the Millbrae station of the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) subway in the California Bay area. When he was called to work an extra shift, he almost didn’t do it. Now Seals says he is glad that he did.

The Dublin/Pleasanton station was short-handed and Seals was asked to come in and cover a shift on his day off. When he arrived at midnight, he expected the shift to be just like any other. But he was very wrong. He hadn’t been there long when he heard a cry for help coming from the front of the subway. He ran to the lead car where the voice was coming from.

What he found when he got to the front shocked him. It was one of his co-workers and he was slumped over in his seat. Seals checked for a pulse and for breathing, but didn’t find either one. He said the man’s lips had turned blue and so he picked him up, laid him on the floor, and began CPR. What Seals didn’t know was that the man had just celebrated his 20th birthday the day before.

Seals was determined to help the man live and never gave up on him. He says he just kept telling the young man to breath and to listen and come back to him. Seals had learned CPR at a previous job, and eventually his efforts paid off. The man finally took a deep breath on his own. But he didn’t give up, even when the man lost consciousness again.

Thanks to Seals and another BART officer that came to the scene, the man had a pulse by the time the ambulance arrived to assist. Although Seals is truly a hero, he gives credit to the young man. He says he is the hero because he had to be determined to live, and Seals says that he is happy that he was able to help give him that opportunity to fight for his life.
