It’s been 21 years since Princess Diana passed away, but the legendary royal is still missed dearly by millions of people all over the world.

Though she was known as the people’s princess, there was a lot that we did not know about Diana until after her passing. That’s why we’ve compiled six of the most surprising secrets that she kept during her remarkable life.

She was related to Prince Charles

Though she was married to Prince Charles from 1981-1996, she was also distantly related to him. Specifically, the pair were 16th cousins once removed, through King Henry VII.

Her sister dated Prince Charles before she did

Charles actually dated Diana’s sister Sarah before the two of them began seeing each other. In fact, it was Sarah who introduced them, and she called herself Cupid for setting them up throughout their marriage.

Her grandmother worked for the queen

Long before Diana became a royal herself, her grandmother Ruth Fermoy worked for the Queen Mother. Ruth started out as one of Her Majesty’s ladies-in-waiting and later held the title Woman of the Bedchamber, which meant she was essentially the Queen’s right hand woman who assisted with all her social engagements.

She made a mistake during her wedding vows

With millions of people watching from all over the world, Diana can be forgiven for being a little nervous during her ceremony. Her nerves showed when she messed up her vows by addressing her husband as “Philip Charles” rather than “Charles Philip,” switching his first and middle names. Whoops!

She tried to commit suicide

Diana suffered bouts of depression throughout her entire life, and it eventually got so bad that she attempted suicide.

“I was so depressed, and I was trying to cut my wrists with razor blades,” she said in a recording that came out after her death. In another recording, Diana admitted to struggling with bulimia, which she began suffering from after Charles grabbed her waist and said, “A bit chubby here, aren’t we?”

She was relentlessly harassed by the paparazzi

It was the paparazzi that was chasing Diana’s vehicle the night of her fatal car crash in Paris, France. Her son Prince William recently opened up about the harassment his mother suffered at the hands of these photographers.

“If you are the Princess of Wales and you’re a mother, I don’t believe being chased by 30 guys on motorbikes who block your path, who spit at you to get a reaction from you and make a woman cry in public to get a photograph, is appropriate,” he said. “Harry and I, we had to live through that.”
