It’s been 35 years since Michael Jackson’s video “Thriller” was released. The video made its premier in Los Angeles and John Landis was the director. Jackson wanted to film the video after seeing “An American Werewolf in London.”
The video lasted 14 minutes and was filmed around Los Angeles. Filming of the iconic video was watched by Marlon Brando, Rock Hudson, Fred Astaire, and Jackie Kennedy Onassis at varying times.
The red jacket that Jackson wore was designed by Landis’s wife and sold for $1.8 million at an auction in 2011. The video created a buying frenzy for the album that wasn’t released until a year later.
Other historical events that happened on this day include the first Hanukkah when Judas Maccabaeus restored the Jerusalem temple in 164 BC, Rebecca Felton became the first woman U.S. senator in 1922, and Ella Fitzgerald debuted as a singer at the age of 16 in the Apollo Theater in 1934.
In more recent times, the movie Toy Story was released on this day in 1995, the Florida Supreme Court affirmed votes in the presidential recount should continue to be tallied in 2000, and NATO invited Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia to become members in 2002.
Thomas Edison unveiled the phonograph in 1877 and in 1941 the first broadcast of the live radio blues program called King Biscut Time was aired. It was the longest running daily radio show in history and inspired several blues musicians including B.B. King.
Actress Goldie Hawn celebrates her 73rd birthday today. She is an actress, director, and producer that is known for her roles in movies including The First Wives Club, Cactus Flower, and Bird on a Wire.
