Bullying is something that millions of children all over the world are forced to deal with every day. Teachers are now trained to identify, prevent, and stop bullying when they witness it.
Chris Bergen is a high school teacher in Leavenworth, Kansas. Recently, Chris and his wife Anna saw a viral video about a teenage boy named Derrin, who was bullied and attacked to the point where he had a gun to his head. Chris and Anna were so disturbed by what they saw that they decided that they had to do something to fight the bullying epidemic themselves.
“Let’s gather and take Derrin to lunch and show him that the community not only supports him but is willing to show up and demonstrate that we will not tolerate anyone else hurting him,” Chris wrote on his Facebook page. “This is a community event, aimed at a peaceful show of support. The ride will tentatively gather at Bass Pro Shops in Independence for an escort to Derrin’s house.”
When Chris saw the look of sheer joy on Derrin’s face that day, he knew that he had to do more to help victims of bullying. This “Ride For Derrin” event ended up giving Chris the idea to offer to give bullied students an escorted ride to class.
“If they want to be driven to school is a classic car and that will make them feel better, then we will drive them to school in a classic car,” Chris said.
“The idea behind this was to let these kids know they are not alone, and they can walk into school a little bit prouder than they did before that happened,” Anna added.
We applaud this teacher for taking action to help bullied students!
